Veterinary Assisting? *10 points best answer*?

So i was looking into applying to an animal health technology program with hopes of become a vet assistant in a clinic or hospital for animals. if anyone has this job ir knows someone who has it would you please exaplin to me the perks, wages, downsides, etc…

thank you =)

First, you are confusing 2 different roles on the veterinary team. Veterinary technicians have a degree in veterinary technology (animal health technology) from a college (if you are in the US, it should be an AVMA accredited vet tech program). Veterinary assistant is an entry-level position that requires no formal education or training. There are veterinary assisting programs out there but they are of greatly varying value.

I have been a veterinary assistant for several years and a veterinary technician for many more. The hours vary depending on the type of facility you work for. They may be strictly normal office hours or they may be overnights and weekends or a mix of the two and there may even be “on-call” times as well. Perks also will depend very much on the type of facility your work in. Generally pay isn’t great and there aren’t a ton of perks but you can job hunt with perks in mind. You may end up making a good wage or not much over minimum wage depending on how much you can pick and choose your jobs. You may or may not have health insurance for yourself or discounted veterinary care for your pets. You may end up with a boss that pays for your continuing education that is required to keep up your registration/licensure/certification.

The work is often stressful since you are dealing with animals who are ill and/or hurt and scared. You are also dealing with upset and stressed owners which adds more stress to your day.

For specifics on the requirements for credentialing in your state, you should check your state licensing board, veterinary medical association or veterinary technician association.
