Why are Mormon’s forbidden to drink coffee and tea?
According to D&C 89:9, Church members are not to drink “hot drinks” which have been defined by other Mormon Prophets as coffee and tea. The question I ask is why? I’ve seen Mormon’s offer a health based argument for this, but it just doesn’t add up. There’s at least as much if not more research to support the health benefits of coffee and especially tea, over those studies that suggest their negative impacts. Furthermore caffeine is often cited as both a substance that Mormon’s should avoid and the reason for the prohibition on coffee and tea, but if this is the case why is the Word of Wisdom silent about it? Caffeine was discovered by a German chemist in 1819, so if it’s truly bad, why is it not mentioned?

We trust in the revelation that came from God. Besides coffee is clearly addicting (not like nicotine but still)…do you notice how people have to live off of the stuff just to function once they are in the habit…
Tea…I don’t know…we are allowed to have herbal teas and stuff. The tea we are forbidden from is the traditional black tea (don’t quote me on this though cause I’m not sure) that those in England use like Americans use coffee.
So regardless what the scholarship is saying out there about this stuff, the point with faith is trusting in God, not man…and just you watch, in the next ten years science will have more good and bad to say about coffee and tea.
