Should the U.S. federal government substantially increase its public health assistance to Sub-Saharan Africa?
There is perhaps no issue more timely and critical than the status of people living in poverty in Sub-Saharan Africa. While world attention has once again focused on this crisis, attention has not translated to sufficient action. Despite the promise of the G-8 to end African poverty, the World Development Movement calls the current solutions “a disaster for the world’s poor.” The public health problem in Africa is an essential.
I’d hesitate to send more money into Africa. The number of children per woman runs around 6 or 7 so any assistance we send will only make their problems worse, with even more people starving in the future when we can no longer afford to send aid. If they could get their population disaster under control, I’d be happy to contribute. Visiters to Africa often describe the place as a sea of children compared to the west. So feel free to send your own money, I’d prefer that you don’t volunteer mine though.
Meg, did the Asian countries fix themselves or did western countries do it for them? I don’t think there’s anything we can do to help Africa. They will either do it themselves or the next famine will do it for them. They can’t all come here you know.
I highly recommend a book called Collapse, by Jared Diamond. It’s all about the social, environmental and economic reasons why societies die. Excessive population growth is a big reason. I’ll put a link to the book in my source list.
Oh, and about claiming to be a moral nation, that pretty much went out the window when Bush took office.
