A PAPER PRESENTED AT THE LAST YEAR STUDENTS IPAM, University of Sierra Leone.
AIMS ANDLOBJECTIVES
The overall objective of this paper is to provide a guide to help students in choosing their dissertation topics, developing their thesis project and
writing their final essay.
At the end of the seminar, students should:
– Understand what an essay is and its importance, and the subject.
be able to identify and avoid common problems in undergraduate essays.
-To help students choose their dissertation topics.
-Identify the requirements and content of dissertations.
Being able to develop a research project or thesis.
Introduction
If you think that writing a thesis is simple, you should think twice.
The essence of this paper is to help students make a good essay for the award of their diploma.
First All students must know the importance not only writing dissertations, theses, but he understood perfectly. An essay is not all about grades obtained. Dissertation extends well beyond the completion of your diploma. This is the first test of your creativity. A thesis is an opportunity to identify and explore your interests. A thesis is supposed to be an academic piece of work. Thus, we need to look at concepts, principles, methods of analysis. It might be a synthesis of most of what you've learned over the years in college. It is a structured piece of work. This is not an article. From your argument says a lot about you. It highlights your ability to communicate, test your powers of analysis, and draw meaningful conclusions. With your memories, you have the ability to know your strength or weakness. Theses show if you have the ability to plan and make decisions under stress
JUSTIFICATION.
The last discussion I had with the external examiner, said she had decommission almost every essay graded A, because they lack academic content. Based on that I decided to review papers prepared by IPAM students (undergraduates for the last 3-4 years). The question I asked was whether a lower grade, or are we focusing learned more about the job search. If you look at the academic standpoint, then the inability of students to submit a thesis good imply that they will not get better grades. However, if our students can not make a good argument, then they would not be able identify and resolve issues related to contemporary problems in later life. They would not be able to develop projects that help their communities and countries.
Some problems related to the memory of students are:
In-appropriate subject
-Related Topics
-Lack of understanding of the literature review
-Literature review too long.
Goals-related topic
-Objectives not properly reported
Problem-statement is not well structured
-Grammatical errors
-Lack of consistency and logical flow throughout the essay
-Questionnaires inappropriate.
-Analysis
-Predictable result.
IMPORTANCE dissertations:
.
- Theses are, in most cases, students first original piece of detailed work
– In large measure the students who understand really dissertation writing will be able to develop practical projects of their own. Because you wrote a thesis does not mean you understand dissertations, for example, ask a few people who wrote essays to explain what a problem statement is, and you'll be surprised. Do not write a dissertation without understanding the essay question. eg those who choose a dissertation in the library, not knowing if its good or not, and then copy format, will write an essay, but certainly do not understand what a dissertation is. If you've written essay without understanding a theory as to how your thesis is not good enough. The fact that speakers do not publish in Sierra Leone could be due to they do not understand how to write an essay well, or they forgot. . A research paper in a journal is just a summary form dissertation. However, it could also be attributed to the fact that there are no incentives.
- Some – thesis published in May. Some theses written by students were published. Even undergraduates.
- Some – people have developed a career based on their thesis. There is a case of a Nigerian student in London, which has based its argument on the rail British (en route) and made a discovery that has saved them a lot of money and was employed as a consultant.
- – Some Theses contribute to important discoveries. Some companies like Microsoft pay the substantial sum of money to researchers or volunteers to spend by PhD students for new ideas and innovations.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Students should also understand the requirements for each university dissertations.
- How-weighting is assigned to the essay in your university? Six credits, equal to two subjects. Then an A in A Dissertation means two in two subjects.
- Of course, you should write your thesis in your industry
- -What should be sections of your dissertation, how many chapters
- -What should be the minimum number of words?
- -What should be the format?
- -What should be the color? In some universities, each course space has its own color.
- How-notes assigned to different parts of the essay. (See attached marking scheme)
- Dissertation-Presentation: The standard required is a A4 page, single-sided, one and half line spacing of 40mm left margin for binding and right margins of at least 15mm. (see Guide to the thesis IPAM).
SELECTING A thesis:
Certainly there will always be many theories as there are writers. The only problem is to choose one. As long as there are problems to solve, issues to be addressed, opportunities exploited, and to make discoveries, relations are established, comparisons be made, theories to be proved, or hypothesis testing, there will always dissertations, thesis, or projects to be written. This statement highlights the direction and scope of the thesis. Is this around the world or flat? This issue has taken a very long time to respond.
The dissertation process.
Themes Just do not emerge from the depression
: Choose a subject is a process. It begins with the recognition of a problem. She then moves along the following steps:
-Problem/opportunity Relations identification, formulation
-Creating the design Search
-Choice of research method
Data-Collection
-Data Analysis
-Writing and presentation of the report.
So an argument revolves around the steps outlined above
– You must first read, think, and discuss your ideas. Keep a notebook to record ideas, questions and
-References. Start with a broad focus. Of course, you must locate your particular study within a broader academic debate.
Until you start reading, research and writing, you can not begin to narrow your focus.
-Try to formulate your question in question explores a relationship between two or more ideas, variables, concepts, phenomena, events or things. You do not need to know the answers before you start.
-Also, do not drift along waiting for the perfect subject to get there: Almost anything you choose, once couched in terms of an academic project economically viable, could become a subject of much contention.
Well-being or subject of your thesis will be related to principles, concepts and themes in your course of advanced topics (s) is an opportunity identify and explore your own areas of interest.
-As consideration for your personal enthusiasm, he is also important that the design of your project with an awareness of the constraints that you encounter.
Questions you should ask yourself:
-Will the topic sustain your interest in the coming months.
-Is there an existing literature in which you can locate your work
-Is there enough material to provide proof that you need?
"Is this the only topic you can search with time and resources?
-Do you have the time and opportunity for empirical work?
Remember always the following:
A thesis need not be totally new, revolutionary rewrite revelation textbooks.
Studying an old essay in a new way, a different perspective may be a new contribution.
– All essays are geared toward solving a particular problem or identify opportunities. So be sure your subject chosen meets a real problem or issue.
-The theme argument must be appropriate for the topics you have to work. You should be able to apply the techniques, concepts, principles you have learned.
-Ideally, your topic must be Interest for your advisor.
– - A good thesis should contribute to the field or topic. Identifying a gap in the scholarship existing as an issue was not addressed, or a new application space methodologies.
– View magazine articles and books published recently and recently completed thesis in your department, because the authors often suggest questions and new research areas arising their work.
– Or a story out of previous academic work or work-related issues, then investigate the kinds of projects you enjoyed working on the past.
-Find the gaps in knowledge in your field of study. It is essential of what has been discovered and studied before, relevant to your area, then try to identify gaps in your field.
by eg Is there an accounting standard for the public sector?. Is it effective?.
Are principles of marketing applied in non-governmental organizations:
What are consumer perceptions of the proliferation of banks in Sierra Leone. What effect will the economy.
-Look for something not clear wave. Your dissertation is your research that demonstrates your understanding of the subject clearly.
-Be organized maximize your search efforts
-Choose an area of the first object, then a thesis.
-Your research skills. One way evaluate your research skills and make sure they are up to is to pursue a potential topic in your research methods or statistics courses where you can get immediate feedback from an instructor. You can use these courses to solve potential problems in your methodology or your review of the literature.
– A good thesis is located in a current literature,
– Is there an existing field literature in which you work? Is there sufficient literature available?
PROPOSAL FORMAT:
Proposals for the memory is always dependent on the field topic of your choice You may propose an issue in accounting, education, philosophy, business, history or social sciences.
A sample proposal must have quality preview that you can send it to your teacher. Some parts needed can be learned. What follows below are the parameters necessary for your thesis proposal.
-Introduction
-Problem statement
-Goals and Objectives
-justification
Brief review of the literature.
-Research methodology
Unless demand otherwise the institution, supervisor, about 3-5 pages is enough to highlight the points above and to convince the supervisor that the theme chosen is worthy of investigation
Introduction:
The introduction is a summary of 100-200 words indicating that objectives are, what you write. Many students confuse this section with the background / history sections, but generally they should be kept separate.
A good formula for your introduction is to put the issue in context as concisely as possible. Answer the following questions:
-Is there a problem?
What's this?
Why does it need to solve?
Who will benefit from your investigation?
-In what sense will they benefit
-In what sense add my contribution to what is already known
What, in general terms that you will solve the problem. for example, collect data, data analysis.
-By what methods? For example, case study
-What are the constraints or limitations of the study.
Problem Statement:
The problems are normally considered as deviations normal. Think about your health problem as the gap between what should happen in your community and what happens. This gap between an acceptable or desirable status of health and current status.
How to do it.
For write your problem statement, briefly answer the following questions:
"What should happen?
-This happens?
Who is affected and to what extent?
-What would happen if the problem is not addressed?
Examine the data on your problem:
Ages
sex
-race/ethnicity
socio-economic status
-The geographic distribution.
such as reporting problems:
The The socioeconomic impact of traffic congestion in Sierra Leone.:
The increase in the number or cars and people in Freetown and lack of decentralized structures has led or highlighted a looming problem, which if not addressed will affect not only the economy and social life, but the development and productivity. This problem is congestion. Over the last 10 years has not only the population Freetown grew 600 percent from 400,000 to 1.8million but the traffic situation in Freetown has also become acute. Statistics show an average of 5,000 cars are imported into the country each year. And since we have maintained the same number of roads since independence, with no other means of transport, For example, sea or rail, the problem could not be overestimated. Although the issue of adequate roads is one factor leading to the situation, road quality is a major factor. Research also shows that a total of 11,000 km of roads in the country, only 900 km (10%) of roads are paved.
If this problem is not resolved over the next five years to 10 years, this situation is so alarming that the cars would not be able to move from east to west. The effect on the economy in terms of lost working hours, transport, and productivity would be alarming. Therefore there should be an immediate plan to address this problem if a critical situation must be addressed in the future.
BACKGROUND ESSAY:
Background The essay is an article written with the assumption that the reader knows nothing and should therefore give a full account of what they need to know to appreciate the stakes.
The background and history section of your memory highlights the empirical basis of the question you have chosen.
The purpose of a feature article is to give the reader the relevant facts concerning your chosen thesis subject, so they understand the material or case that you will write later and how it will be linked to your theoretical question. It should not only fill in details of the place or topic you want, but implicitly illustrate the need and importance of your research. For example: What marketing activities have been conducted at the Commercial Bank of Sierra Leone without a marketing department. If the subject is on strategies marketing in commercial banks in Sierra Leone. The bottom should not be merely background to a commercial bank.
Search Question / Hypothesis.
This section lists the research questions, it is equally acceptable to present the hypothesis.
An example would be:
1) What are the attitudes of … ..
2) Is there a significant difference between … ..
3) Is there a significant association between …
Importance of the study:
This provision creates perspective of looking at the problem. It highlights how your study focuses on major issues and uses a convincing rationale to justify why you study. It is subject worth pursuing. The importance of the study answered questions:
Why your study is important?
To whom is it important?
What benefit (s) may occur if your study is done?
Literature:
Literature review is the systematic study of all existing work that is relevant to the research. It is concerned locate reading, evaluating and citing reports related
search.
Literature review helps the researcher checks the degree which previous research has addressed the problem at hand.
Literature review also guides the adoption of another and a better method to investigate the problem than previously anticipated by the survey.
In reviewing the literature, the researcher's understanding of the issues is expanded. This puts the researcher in a better position for professional intelligent guesses about the attempt to answer the research questions (hypothesis
Also, the literature review of research grants and awareness of the range of appropriate instruments are available for data collection.
If for example the topic essay is an evaluation of the effectiveness of an audit system in the public sector, the documentation should include discussions on what others have written about an effective auditing system in general and Pulic sector in particular. What problems, issues, what is the best method to investigate such a system. Authors cite.
Search Goals:
The problem / opportunity formulation results in the formulation of research objectives. These objectives are set out in terms of specific information necessary and desirable to solve the research problem. Objectives formulated and serve as a roadmap for development research project. They also serve as standard allows outside experts to assess the quality and value of the work. Were the objectives achieved and make recommendations flow logically from the objectives and research findings.were the research objectives achieved
Objectives should be as precise and unambiguous. Remember that the overall research effort in terms of time and money is directed towards achieving the objectives. When the researcher highlights the research objectives, the supervisor must agree that the objectives can not achieve the objective. The objectives are what is needed to achieve the objectives.
Methodology:
The section describes your basic methodology Research Plan. It usually starts with a number of short introductory paragraphs restate the purpose and research questions.
A plan of research, descriptive or causal selected according to project objectives. The next step is to choose a means of data collection. There are three methods of basic research:
-Survey
-Observation
-Experiment.
Survey:
Survey research is often a descriptive, but may be causal. Survey research involves interaction with the interviewer respondents, either in person or by mail, obtain facts, opinions, and attituded. A questionnaire was used to provide a methodical and structured approach to data collection. Face to face in May has place in the respondent's home, in a mall or in a place of business.
Observation: Observation of the research is the research that monitors the respondents actions without direct interaction.
Experiments:
The experiments are the third research method used to collect data. An experiment is research in which the investigator changes one or more variable pricing, packaging, design, shelf space, the theme of the advertisement or advertising expenditures, while observing the effects of these changes on another variable.
Selection of the sampling procedure and sample size.
The fundamental questions are:
-Define the population
-Draw a representative sample of the population
Infer-your results from the sample the population
The general idea of inferential research (using a sample representing the whole population) depends on an accurate description of the population.
Usually only the study population can be defined as follows: All students with IPAM Business administration and accounting policies … or all potential consumers of our products.
Method sampling:
The sampling procedure should be described in great detail. There are many sampling methods from which to choose. Describe in detail how you will select the sample. Use specific names, place, etc. Here you apply the methods learned not to describe in terms of their advantages and disadvantages, for example, the benefits of sampling random, are:
Instrumentation:
Here the emphasis is on research tools. For example, questionnaire interviews, etc. newsgroups If you are using a survey instrument that was designed by someone else, the source state of survey. Describe the theoretical variables that the survey attempted to measure. Including a copy of the actual investigation, eg questionnaire attached.
Method of data analysis.
The analysis plan should be described in detail. Explain how each research question, objectives or assumptions will be analyzed. Describe the type of statistical tests to be performed to answer this hypothesis.
State which variables will be included in the analysis and identify the dependent variables and dependent, if these relationships exist. The researcher may also use techniques starting with analysis of single frequency, ultimately culminating in the complex techniques to several variables.
