Is not the “Concept of Hero” in America part of what subjects veterans to mental health problems after war?
Trauma causes PTSD, but not just trauma. War is never like a person expects. The act of killing and being a target to be killed is a stress that normal ideas and beliefs, and normal coping mechanisms often can not handle or protect an individual from Mental Health problems. Sometimes terrible mental health problems which explains why 18 Combat Veterans a week commit suicide.
People commit suicide when they feel hopeless. They can not cope with the pain, fear, memories, loss, guilt, sorrow and so on. It is an over powering set of feelings and extreme mental pain and even humiliation that drives people to suicide.
And it is a measure of the over-powering experience of suffering through combat and surviving combat.
The War in Iraq is a War in the middle of a City full of people often, so dead children, woman, kids, grandfathers and so on our a common sights, smell, sound, and memory.
The concept of being a Hero does not sheild the Veteran from the terror of combat and the aftermath.
Actually I think this Hero concept has more of a devastating effect on homeland Police and Fire. The expectations are greater than they have been accustomed to dealing with in this hero worship society.
My experience as one who has survived a few years of combat is that being a survivor does more to mess up your head and head you down the path to PTSD. Why me? Why did I survive and not my buddy who gave his life for me? I think there is a time in combat when we realize just how closely connected we are as humans. We leave secure areas to run out to pull our fellow wounded troopers in. You expect them to survive after you have done this…you don’t think about the risk you just took. I really don’t think many guys who read their citations for medals remember much of what really happened other than their fellow man was in need.
