Which states are the richest and the poorest?
I’m curious to find out which US States have the highest and lowest standards of living (on the basis of things like literacy rate, infant mortality rate, lifespan, as well as availability of amenities such as education, health care, emergency services, etc)
I know that each state has rich and poor areas, but I am talking averages here, the same way we grade nations on such bases.
By median income: Richest: Maryland $70,500 Poorest: Mississippi, $36,500
By Life Expectancy: Highest: Hawaii, 81.7 Lowest Mississippi 73.9 (D.C is lower at 73.8 but not state)
By Infant Mortality per 1,000: Lowest: Utah 4.5 Highest: Florida 14.1 (Mississippi is second highest 11.4)
By Literacy: Highest: Minnesota and North Dakota 94% Lowest: California 77%
By Human Development Index: Highest Connecticut, Lowest Mississippi
By Poverty Rate: Lowest New Hampshire 5.6% Highest Mississippi 20.1% (D.C is Higher)
By Unemployment Rate: Lowest North Dakota 4.1% Highest Detroit 14.7%
The poorest hands down is Mississippi. The Richest more debatable probably in the North east.
