I’m doing an essay in Health Psychology……?

in which I am required to discuss social cognition models of Health Behaviour. Doing background reading however I am not entirely sure which models are social cognition models, and which are not, as different books, and articles give different opinions.

I just want to ask then which social cognition models can be considered social cognition models. I don’t want to be talking about models which are not social cognition models. I understand that whether they can be considered true social cognition models is another matter.

Social cognition is a growing area of social psychology that studies how people perceive, think about, and remember information about others. One assumption in social cognition is that reality is too complex to easily discern, and so we see the world according to simplified schemas or images of reality.

Social cognition theory was developed by Bandura (1977, 1986) and suggests that expectancies, incentives and social cognitions govern behaviour. Expectancies include:

* Situation outcome expectancies: the expectancy that a behaviour may be dangerous (e.g. ‘smoking can cause lung cancer’).
* Outcome expectancies: the expectancy that behaviour can reduce the harm to health (e.g. ‘stopping smoking can reduce the chances of lung cancer’).
* Self-efficacy expectancies: the expectancy that the individual is capable of carrying out the desired behaviour (e.g. ‘I can stop smoking if I want to’).
