BERTRAND EVA Adams was born in Wonder, Nevada in 1908. She went school in Reno and graduated from the University of Nevada in 1928, then taught for a number of years and then back to school – Columbia University for her Masters in English in 1936. She then obtained a Master of Laws from the University George Washington. She was a member of the Bar both in Nevada and Washington, DC and practiced law before the Supreme Court in 1954. President Kennedy appointed the director of the Mint of the United States in 1961 and remained in that position under President Johnson, until 1969. In retirement, she returned live in Reno. She died August 23, 1991.
Walter Van Tilburg Clark was born in Maine in 1909, but grew up and attended college in Reno, where his father was president of the University of Nevada. He received his BA and MA from the University of Nevada. His first novel, The Ox-Bow Incident was published in 1940, 1943, 20th Century Fox made a film of this book. The City of trembling leaves came next, and his book, The Track of the Cat was released in 1949. He also wrote many stories and poetry during his life. He died in 1971 at the age of 62 years.
Velma Bronn Johnston was born on March 5, 1912, in Washoe County, and raised on the family "Double Lazy Heart Ranch" When she married Charles Johnston, they have turned the ranch in ranch "dude" for children. It is well known as an activist for animal rights. She led a campaign to prevent the removal of horses and wild asses on public lands and helped get a law passed to stop the aircraft and vehicles land to be used to capture wild horses and donkeys and causing their death. The 92 U.S. Congress passed the Free-Wild Horses roaming and Burros Act of 1971. President Nixon was enacted.
Johnston died of cancer June 27, 1977 at the age of 65.
Harry Mason Reid is the former U.S. senator from Nevada, and was majority leader in the Senate since January 2007. He was born in Searchlight, Nevada December 2, 1939. It was also the minority leader in the Senate from 2005 until the Democrats won control of the Senate the 2006 elections. He is standing for reelection in 2010, with some fierce competition. There are several initiatives that he has either sponsored or cosponsored – Prevention of the first amendment (with Hilary Clinton) that would fund abortion prevention efforts, it has also introduced Senate Bill ethics reform that would prohibit members of Congress from accepting gifts, meals and trips from lobbyists. He believes that Roe vs. Wade should be overturned, although he believes in a "limited right to abortion" He voted for the Defense of Marriage Act but it is against the federal amendment on marriage. This gives a fair idea of where he stands on some issues. He makes his home Searchlight, Nevada.
Carson Wayne Newton American singer, was born in Roanoke, Va., April 3, 1942. While still a child, his family moved to Ohio. There he began singing in local clubs and theaters. For health reasons (he had asthma) the family moved to Phoenix where he attended high school. In 1958, a booking agent from Las Vegas has seen Wayne on a show local television. Accordingly, it has been based in Las Vegas, Nevada as an entertainer for over 40 years. He earned the nickname Mr. Las Vegas.
Dolora Zajick was born in Salem, Oregon March 24, 1952, but was raised in Nevada. It is an opera star American "is probably the most representative of Verdian mezzo-soprano repertoire dramatic" (Wikipedia). She has worked with the Metropolitan Opera in New York. She graduated from the University of Nevada in Reno and it always makes his home in Reno.
