how does working out on an elliptical trainer compare to running?
Just like half the country, I started a diet/exercise regimen at the beginning of the year. So far, so good…I’ve lost a little over 20 lbs. I started out weighing 293 lbs. and I’m down to 273. My goal weight is 182 lbs. I have a ways to go, for sure, but I’m at the age where long-term health is much, MUCH more important than looking good for the women at the bar.
Actually – I don’t even go to the bar anymore, since I gave my life to Christ, but that’s a different question/answer altogether!!
Anyways – I’ve always been a good natural athlete but I’m actually looking forward to going to the gym! One of my favorite warmup exercises is 25-30 minutes on the elliptical. When I first started out I was lucky to get a 10-minute mile in, but the last time I worked out I did my first sub-7 minute mile EVER and two more sub-8 miles. Extremely encouraging.
How do miles on the elliptical translate on the track? I know it’s harder to run outside, but how much harder? Any clues? HELP!!
My speed on the eliptical is alot faster than on the track. I think its because the machine lets you push against it in all portions of your stride, using more of your range of motion and muscles. The amount of energy you use to do a mile on the machine should be same as on the track; the machine is just more efficient at converting your stride into motion than the flat ground.
