Are the any good websites that explain just facts about the new universal health care plan?
I read a lot of questions on here about the new universal health care plan. Everyone seems to have two major opinions on it, it is good or it is bad. I would really like to form an opinion of my own but I know nothing about it. So I ask if any of you know of any good websites that explain just facts about the new universal health care plan and possibly what exactly it’s going to change. I understand that it was a lengthy bill (or whatever they call it), but I just want to know what’s going on. Thank you for taking the time to read my question!
thank you so much “in the vortex”
In The Vortex e-mailed me to ask if I’d give you a few sites or summaries of the new laws (there are two) regarding health care and insurance reforms. The original one signed into law was the Senate version without the Committee Mark-Up fixes added. This had to be voted through AS IS by the House (rules say both the House and Senate have to approach an exact copy of a bill and, if you recall, the Senate version passed very late at night on Christmas eve with all 60 of the Senate Democrats coming together just to get past the GOP filibuster trying to block passage. If House Speaker Nancy Pelosi had made even one single change to the Senate version, then the Senate version would have gone back TO the Senate for another vote, but the Democrats by then had lost the 60-vote filibuster-proof majority…so she convinced her “herd of cats” rugged-individual Representatives on the Democrat side to stick together and voted for the Senate bill without the desired changes and NO public option to contain costs. What this first version does do is make health care coverage and insurers what I call the three A+’s: affordable, accessible, and accountable. Insurance companies now must NOT refuse due to pre-existing conditions, nor can they abruptly cancel coverage for premium-payers once illness or injury occurs, and assorted other features. The whitehouse.gov sign has everything posted, or you can use ReadTheBill.org.
Now the second part is called the “Fix-It” and contained the proposed changes which, to avoid filibuster and require only a 51-vote majority in the Senate (a SIMPLE majority), had to be worded so that each Amendment proposed related SPECIFICALLY to BUDGET, and then the Senate Democrats had to be SELF-DISCIPLINED enough to vote solid NO to every obstructionist amendment offered by the Senate Republicans who wanted to completely block—If the Dems had voted “yes” on any of the Amendments and changed even one thing, the bill would have had to go back to the House for another vote. Tedious rules, I know… Majority Leader Harry Reid held Senate sessions all night to wear the obstructionist Republicans down, and Republicans retaliated by pulling tricks that canceled committee meetings on such things as handling North Korea (two generals flew in for this and yet it was canceled just to be ornery), or dealing with homeless vets returning from battle…How anyone could vote for a Republican this coming election is BEYOND ME!…Anyway, one provision in the Fix-It bill signed into law about two weeks ago is that college students can make lower-interests DIRECT loans through the Department of Education now instead of having high-interest banks or lending companies act as middlemen. The health care reforms also allows kids to stay on their parents’ insurance plans up to the age of 26, which is helpful for college students as well. There are a lot of good features, some which take effect in 2014 and some now.
