While watching the Health Care summit today, and hearing how Americans can not?
afford quality heath care because they are too poor, I saw many of the same lawmakers who literally gave away American jobs to Mexico and countries overseas………..Is this ironic?
“Lawmakers” and politicians, with a few notable exceptions (i’m thinking of people like Dennis Kucinich, Cynthia McKinney, and Ralph Nader), are conservative no matter what side of politics they claim to be on. They are generally wealthy, so their interests are skewed towards the interests of the wealthy. They are surrounded by lobbyists – well paid, well-funded industry stooges whose entire job is to campaign to protect and enhance the profits of private companies – no matter what sort of damage they end up doing to people’s work rights, people’s human rights, the environment, or any other humane consideration. They listen to “think tanks”, which are generally set up as front groups by corporations with particular interests. They are generally bought in (and sold out) to an economic ideology called “neo-liberalism”, which preaches (among other things) that if all trade barriers are opened up, then the economy will thrive and people will be free. (Obviously, this does not actually happen.)
The only thing that drags them over to the left is pressure from below, from the people they claim to represent.
If Democrats think they can get more votes by campaigning for healthcare reform, then they will do it. But you need to apply constant pressure from below to force them into it. And if you give them an inch of breathing room, they will water down and cripple healthcare reform (or whatever reform it is that you need) as much as they can without causing an outcry (Obama’s healthcare plan, in it’s current form, is a joke – a complete sell-out to greedy and amoral insurance industry lobbyists).
The important thing to recognise is that their interests are not the same as your interests, no matter whether they call themselves “Democrat” or “Republican” – Noam Chomsky said it best: The Democrats and the Republicans are just the two wings of the “Business Party”. They do not have the interests of the vast majority of people at heart – they listen to their bank accounts and to the companies who can afford the most lobbyists.

Lawmakers are quite capable of controlling the corporations who move their manufacturing overseas. It is, in fact, the creation of “free trade agreements” (which lead to legislation) that cause that sort of thing, and the failure to create regulations that protect working conditions (and keep jobs in places where working conditions are protected). Plenty of environmental and food standard regulation exists, and is capable of working when it’s actually administered properly. The idea that you can’t regulate corporate treatment of employees is just wishful thinking on the part of right-wing idealogues.
On another level entirely, government purchasing can influence the market in which those corporations act (my country has just decided that it’s military uniforms are going to be made in Chinese sweatshops. You cannot *possibly* believe that this doesn’t influence corporate outsourcing to overseas manufacturers).
The idea that corporate activity is unlegislatable, or unrelated to politics and politicians, is just factually and economically false, in multiple ways.
Look at NAFTA, the failed MAI (which, by the way, failed because citizens put pressure on their governments), the creation of “free trade zones” and “tax havens” by third world countries, the patterns of investment that governments are capable of when they actually want an industry to exist (as an extreme example, “war economies”).
The bottom line is, politicians are entirely capable of influencing the decisions (and legality) of corporations. And because corporations claim so much un-justifiable power over our culture and livelihoods, politicians need to be held *responsible* for their garbage. The problem is, they have no *interest* in doing so unless the public forces them to; that’s the problem with non-participatory democracy. That’s why, in Western capitalist democracies, you usually get two identical parties in power (who pretend to be polar opposites).
